YouthBuild Director’s October 2020 Update

Daniel Carrera, YouthBuild Program Director, awards Yugonda Sample-Jones a certificate of appreciation for her support of the program and mission.

“The freedom to be your best means nothing unless you are willing to do your best.”

Colin Powell

Greetings Newport News YouthBuild students, staff & Hampton Roads family!

Newport News YouthBuild students continue to perform in the classroom, as well as in the community. The quote by General Colin Powell speaks volumes to what the Newport News YouthBuild students have done over the past several months. The students are finishing the Boot Camp portion of the program and are preparing to receive certifications from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), as well as Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

I want to recognize and congratulate the following:

Kenneth O’Neil: YouthBuild’s Construction Trainer – Mr. O’Neil recently completed the National Center for Construction and Education Research (NCCER) certification. The NCCER certification will prepare, teach, and certify students on all safety measures before going on a construction work site.

Jaylen Rodriquez: COHORT Student of the Month for August 2020 – Mr. Rodriquez had perfect attendance since the start of the program and completed all assignments in a timely manner with very few corrections from YouthBuild staff. Mr. Rodriquez consistently displays leadership traits and is a mentor to his YouthBuild peers.

Yugonda Sample-Jones: Ms. Jones was instrumental in assisting YouthBuild staff with recruitment efforts, providing community outreach connections, and hosting YouthBuild students at the Four Oaks Homeless Shelter clothes closet during the month of August.

Daniel Carrera, YouthBuild Program Director, recognizes Jaylen Rodriquez as the COHORT Student of the Month for August 2020.

Newport News YouthBuild is on the move! The program moved from Brooks Crossing to Four Oaks Training Center on September 21, 2020. The students are beginning to start the trades portion of the program, which will consist of electrical, carpentry, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC).

Newport News YouthBuild is currently recruiting for COHORT 2 – with a start date of November 2, 2020. To find out more about this opportunity, please contact: Ms. Arkedra Reese at (757) 386-6113.
