Volunteers of America has lost a champion of the under-served. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Volunteers of America Chesapeake board member and former national board chair Nancy Gofus. She passed away on Oct. 17 after a brief battle with lung cancer.
We spotlighted Mrs. Gofus and her husband Joe earlier this year for their unwavering commitment as long-time donors.

Mrs. Gofus served on the Volunteers of America national board of directors from 2004 – 2013, and was elected chair of the board in 2010. She was a retired senior vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Business, responsible for marketing strategy, advertising and brand management, and product management for the company, a premier provider of advanced global communications and information technology solutions.
“Nancy was a gifted and dedicated leader for Volunteers of America,” said VOA President and CEO Mike King. “Her marketing acumen coupled with her faith helped transform the organization at a critical time. We have lost her much too soon. May God bless her family at this difficult time.”
We will always remember Mrs. Gofus’ commitment to serve.
