Hey Bloggers!
Today is Text Tuesday and we’re raising funds for families in our homeless services programs. Each year we serve over 500 families through supportive & transitional housing as well as shelter and supportive services in our homeless shelters. Many of these families were either facing homelessness or living in homelessness before finding Volunteers of America Chesapeake.
Here in Dev Comm we have the unique opportunity to meet and talk with these families and help share their stories of survival and triumph. Stories like Ms. Jackie’s. We met Ms. Jackie during our Operation Backpack 2012 Campaign. She and her children had become homeless after her husband was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Ms Jackie was also forced to confront her own depression and finally received the help she and her family needed through our Shelter Plus Care program, serving families dealing with mental health issues.

We also serve families through our Transitional Housing Programs including Pratt House. Pratt is home to 35 formerly homeless families and over 100 children. The programming at Pratt helps to transition these families from homelessness to permanent housing by giving them the tools they need to be successful. These tools include financial literacy classes, parenting, nutrition, spiritual development and job placement resources.
