“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand
and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.” ~Edith Sitwell
Starting in October and running through the first week of April, Volunteers of America Chesapeake operates Cold Weather and Hypothermia shelters at 3 program locations covering DC and Virginia. Their purpose: to provide homeless individuals with food, warmth and most importantly, the touch of a friendly hand.
Operated in conjunction with the local faith communities, Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter, The Lighthouse Center and the Loudoun County Homeless Services Center all provide drop-in services specifically designed to address the issue of homelessness during the winter. Each respective program offers supportive services throughout the day including showers, internet access and links to community services including health care and employment assistance.
In the evenings, participants in winter shelter are transported from the program site to participating churches for the night. There, dinner is provided as well as optional spiritual development, games, movies and special entertainment. Each morning, participants are provided with breakfast and bagged lunch and transported back to the program site.
The network of winter shelter services provide unsheltered homeless individuals with access to critical and often life saving resources. The Hilda Barg Homeless Prevention Center also operates an AfterShare program that provides essential resources year round, including bringing water to unsheltered homeless in the heat of the summer and providing warm clothing and blankets in the winter months.
The goal of each program is to bring un-sheltered homeless individuals into our program centers and assist them in obtaining and maintaining permanent housing.
Our winter shelters are in need of your help to continue providing essential care to homeless individuals in our area.
